Additional Service Notes

At 15:30 was piloting a Hurricane 11 C on a training flight practic ing flying in pairs and quarter attacks, which was seen to crash one mile north of Flint, WalesThe plane disintrigated on touching the sea. No body found.
The official report of the accident states:
The accident was due either to the pilot flying accidentially into the sea through haze, or to engine failure. There is no evidence to support the latter possibility and the former seems more likely. Visibility thought fit for flying, was poor.
Location of crash given as map ref 714946 (Sheet 43)
This accident occurred when F/O D.R.K. Nussey (Can..J.43333) Hurricane11c L.F. 369 became separated from his partner F/Lt. Croley in limited visibility and apparently with an R/T failure tried to obtain a pin, point while evidently not watching his altimeter. According to the witnesses the mist and fog over the sea blended with the muddy shallow water.
The R/T log was searched but nothing is recorded after his receiving permission to take off.
In all probability the weather was the prime factor loading to the accident.
Although the possibility on engine failure cannot be ruled out it seems most probable that the pilot when loosing height to pinpoint his position accidentafl.y flew into the sea in poorish visibility.
Concur in the Investigating Officer' s conclusions. This accident was due to an error of judegement by the pilot diving at too steep an angle when reducing height to ground level in. conditions of bad visibility and. being unable to pick up any feature against the muddy water background.
