Service Biography

Josephat Laniel was born in Valleyfield, Quebec, on December 28, 1893. A chemist and the son of Theophile Laniel, he was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Montreal on July 6, 1918, with service number 3165534. He initially served as a private with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment, and was later carried with the Overseas Company, C.O.T.C., Laval University, Military District No. 4. His service was entirely in Canada. During July and August 1918 he developed significant albuminuria and urinary symptoms. A medical board concluded that the condition had existed before enlistment but had been aggravated by service, classified him Category E, and recommended his discharge. Laniel was discharged at Montreal on August 30, 1918, as medically unfit and intended to return to Valleyfield.

1918-07-29 — Standing Medical Board classified him Category E because of albuminuria.
1918-08-12 — Invalid medical examination documented albuminuria, urinary and kidney pain, frequent urination, headaches and swollen legs; condition considered pre-existing and aggravated by service.
1918-08-21 — Medical Board recommended discharge in Category E on account of kidney disease/albuminuria.
1918-08-30 — Discharged as medically unfit; intended residence Valleyfield, P.Q.

Notes

Medical invaliding records describe albuminuria associated with frequent day and night urination, urethral and vesical pain, kidney pain, headaches and swollen legs. Urine examination showed heavy albumen with blood corpuscles and leucocytes. He reported scarlet fever approximately five years earlier. The medical report stated that the disability originated before enlistment and was aggravated by service. The board recommended Category E and discharge on account of kidney disease.
