Mallette was single, Roman Catholic and a farmer. He was born on 11 September 1894 at Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois, Quebec, where he was also living when called up. His father, Philorum Mallette, was next of kin. He reported no Active Militia membership and no previous military or naval service. The 20 August 1918 medical examination recorded height 5 feet 7 inches, weight 133 pounds, chest 32 to 34 inches, clear complexion, blue eyes, fair hair and good physical development.

On 19 September 1918 he was struck off strength on return to the Registrar's Records and discharged at Montreal on demobilization.
