Joseph Lemieux was born at St. Chrysostome, Quebec, on 14 October 1897. A single farmer living at Riverfield, Quebec, he was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined at Montreal on 17 July 1918 as Private 3167474 with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment. He embarked for England in August 1918 and served there with the 10th Canadian Reserve Battalion. In June 1919 he returned to Canada for demobilization and was discharged at Montreal on 4 July 1919.
