Service Biography

Ernest Allen was born at St. Jean Chrysostome, Quebec, on 14 July 1893 and enlisted at Montreal on 15 April 1915 as Private 61855 with the 22nd Battalion. He served in England and France and was wounded in the left leg on 20 September 1916. After evacuation to England and recovery, he served with reserve and depot units, rising through non-commissioned ranks before being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 10th Reserve Battalion in October 1918. During his service he married Maud Coomber. He was struck off strength on general demobilization in September 1919. In 1920 he was awarded the French Médaille d'Honneur avec glaives en vermeil.

Assigned-pay records give Philibert Allen at Aubrey Village, Chateauguay, Quebec, receiving $20 per month; the assignment was stopped 28 February 1919 because Allen was getting married. A notice of intended marriage to Maud Coomber, age 27, of 75 Kimberley Gardens, Harringay, is dated 9 February 1919; later service records identify Mrs. M. Allen as his wife. The reviewed service file does not establish the actual marriage date.
