Charles Sherman Wattie was born in Huntingdon on 7 February 1911. He completed Grade 3 and left school after his father's death. He worked on the family farm until age 28, when he sold it and moved to Huntingdon. He was working at Lefebvre's Grocery and as a truck driver when he enlisted. He served in Canada with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps during the Second World War, enlisting in January 1944. He was discharged in May 1944 due to a hearing impairment he had experienced since childhood.

Charles Sherman Wattie was born at Huntingdon, Quebec, on 7 February 1911. He completed Grade 3 and left school very young. After his father's death he worked on the family farm near Farnham; he later sold the farm and moved to Huntingdon, where he worked in a hardware and paint store, drove a truck and did carpentry. At enlistment he was married to Violet (Fry) Wattie and they had a son, Donald, aged two. His leisure interests included reading newspapers and listening to the radio.

Served in Canada with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps from 7 January to 16 May 1944. Trained at No. 32 Canadian Army Medical Corps (Basic) Training Centre at Petawawa and later served through district depots at Kingston and Montreal South. He was discharged medically after impaired hearing and temperamental instability were assessed as preventing him from meeting required military physical standards.
