Albert Roi was born at Athelstan, Quebec, on 20 June 1897. He first enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Montreal on 3 January 1918 as Private 3155299 with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment, but became illegally absent later that month and was struck off strength as a deserter effective 21 January. He re-enlisted on 14 August 1918 under the same service number. His second period of service remained in Canada, and he was discharged at Montreal on 26 November 1918 in lower medical Category C1.

He became illegally absent from 21 January 1918. A Court of Inquiry held 26 March 1918 later declared him illegally absent and the record was amended to strike him off strength as a deserter effective 21 January 1918. He re-enlisted under the same service number on 14 August 1918. His second service period remained in Canada and ended at Montreal on 26 November 1918, when he was discharged in lower medical Category C1 under demobilization authority.
