Robert Strapps was born at Hemmingford, Quebec, on 14 January 1889. A single Church of England labourer, he enlisted at Bury, Quebec, on 10 June 1916 as Private 749237 with the 117th (Eastern Townships) Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. A Medical Board at Valcartier found him unfit for military service because of pre-existing physical conditions, and he was discharged at Valcartier Camp on 2 August 1916.

At enlistment Strapps was about 27 years old, 5 ft 6 in tall, with a 32.5-36 in chest and 3.5 in expansion. He had a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He was a single Church of England labourer born at Hemmingford, Quebec. The invalid medical history describes marked lateral curvature of the spine, a reducible right inguinal hernia and varicose veins of both legs.

He served in Canada and was taken on strength of the battalion. A Medical Board at Valcartier on 24 July 1916 found marked lateral curvature of the spine, a reducible right inguinal hernia and varicose veins of both legs. The Board found the conditions pre-dated service and were not attributable to service, declared him unfit for military service, and recommended discharge. He was discharged at Valcartier Camp on 2 August 1916.
