Samuel Squire was born at Cornwall Island, Ontario, on 1 April 1891. A farmer, he enlisted at Cornwall, Ontario, on 1 February 1916 as Private 633366 and served in Canada with the 154th Overseas Battalion. In October 1916 a Medical Board found him unfit for military service because of a goitre and recurrent rheumatism, conditions which pre-dated his enlistment and had not been caused by his service. He was discharged at Barriefield Camp, Ontario, on 14 October 1916 as medically unfit.

At enlistment Squire was a farmer, single and Methodist. He was born at Cornwall Island, Ontario, and named his brother David Squire of Cornwall Island as next of kin. His medical history records height 5 ft 7½ in, weight 140 lb, chest 35–37¾ in, dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He had a scar on the tip of the right little finger.

Samuel Squire enlisted at Cornwall, Ontario, on 1 February 1916 as Private 633366 and served in Canada with the 154th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. His initial medical examination found him fit. On 11 October 1916 he was examined by a Medical Board in connection with a large goitre and recurrent attacks of rheumatism. The medical history states that both conditions originated before enlistment at Cornwall, were not caused by service and had not been aggravated by service. The Board found him unfit for military service and recommended discharge; his physical condition was described as the same as before enlistment. He was discharged at Barriefield Camp, Ontario, on 14 October 1916 for being medically unfit, under authority M.O. 3-44-8-154.
