Service Biography

Ludovic Marchand was born at St-Etienne, Beauharnois, Quebec, on 19 April 1896. A single Roman Catholic labourer, he was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined at Montreal on 11 May 1918 as 3160325. He went overseas that summer and served in France with the 22nd Battalion from October 1918 until January 1919, later joining the 2nd Canadian Infantry Works Company. In February 1919 he became dangerously ill with influenza and was subsequently treated for bronchopneumonia, including at 20 General Hospital, Camiers, and 16 Canadian General Hospital, Orpington. He recovered, returned to Canada, and was discharged at Montreal on 22 June 1919 on demobilization as a Lance Corporal.

Notes

At enlistment Marchand was a single Roman Catholic laborer living at 322 Letourneaux Street, Montreal. His mother, Mrs. Adelina Marchand of 333 Lasalle Street, Montreal, was next of kin. He was 5 ft 6 in tall, weighed 144 lb, and had a 33 in minimum and 36 in maximum chest measurement, brown complexion, black eyes and dark-brown hair. An appendicitis scar was noted.

Ludovic Marchand was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined at Montreal on 11 May 1918 as Private 3160325. He embarked from Canada on 26 June 1918, arrived at Liverpool on 15 July, and after reserve-battalion processing transferred to the 22nd Battalion. He was taken on strength with the 22nd Battalion in France on 27 October 1918 and remained with it until 23 January 1919. He then passed through the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp and joined the 2nd Canadian Infantry Works Company on 12 February. On 24 February 1919 he was reported dangerously ill with influenza at 51 Casualty Clearing Station. His condition improved on 26 February and he was removed from the dangerously-ill list on 5 March. He was admitted to 20 General Hospital at Camiers on 13 March and to 16 Canadian General Hospital at Orpington on 18 March with bronchopneumonia, and was discharged from hospital on 17 April. He was attached for demobilization at Seaford on 9 May, sailed for Canada on 14 June, and was discharged at Montreal on 22 June 1919. His discharge documents record his rank as Lance Corporal.
