Service Biography

Jean Hormisdas Rolland was born at St-Étienne-de-Beauharnois, Quebec, on 7 January 1892. A chauffeur, he was called up under the Military Service Act and entered service at Montreal on 30 May 1918 as Private 3162388 with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment. He was absent without leave in June 1918 and was struck off strength as a deserter in July. He returned to service in May 1919 and later served with the Canadian Garrison Regiment and District Depot No. 4. In June 1919 a district court-martial sentenced him to imprisonment with hard labour. He was released in July and discharged at Montreal on 31 July 1919 for misconduct.

Notes

Physical description at enlistment: fair complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. The later Medical History Sheet records 5 ft 8 in, 148 lb and chest 35–39 in. The earlier recruit form records a smaller fully expanded chest measurement; the later formal medical values are used for the structured fields.

He was absent without leave from 19 June 1918 and was struck off strength as a deserter effective 10 July 1918. He was taken back on strength effective 12 May 1919 and posted to the 4th Detachment, Canadian Garrison Regiment. He transferred to District Depot No. 4 Casualty Company effective 18 June 1919. On 20 June 1919 he was sentenced by district court-martial to four months' imprisonment with hard labour in Bordeaux Jail. He was released effective 29 July and discharged at Montreal effective 31 July 1919 for misconduct.
