Letters From the Front

In a letter to his mother, Private W. Scrimgeour, of the 48th Highlanders, tells how he was wounded at Langemarck.

I suppose you have been worrying a great deal about me, as you will have seen that we were in it at Ypres. I got a bullet in my arm and was nearly dead with poisonous gas. The bullet entered my upper arm, passing down to the bone, breaking it at the elbow, and also the forearm, and passed out about the wrist. I had to walk back about 6 miles before I could get anything done to it. That, mother, was the most terrible day of my life. This is not war, it is murder, but I think the Canadians did their part.
