New and stringent food regulations have been applied to hotels and eating-houses throughout Canada. Bread cannot be served till the end of the first course, and the amount of sugar is limited, and the consumption of bacon almost prohibited. All eating-houses are also put under license.
Mr. Hanna, in his valedictory report to the Prime Minister when he resigned the office of Food Controller, declared, “There should be no attempt at any arbitrary fixing of prices for foodstuffs, but there should be a strict regulation of profits by middlemen, the prevention of hoarding for speculative purposes, and the reduction of distributing costs through overlapping and unnecessary labor.”
This policy has been adopted by Mr. Hanna's successors.
