The Burlington Gazette Published: May 3, 1916

Pte. Clifford Carter sent a number of letters to the Burlington Gazette, during his time at the front lines. These were published in this weekly newspaper. The publication dates for these letters were Oct. 27, 1915; December 1 & 8, 1915; February 2, 1916; and May 3, 1916. Pte. Carter died in 1916.

LETTER FROM FRANCE

We have received the following letter on Monday from Pte. Carter:-

Flanders, April 15th.

Dear Mr. Harris,

Here's for a line to say that the Burlington boys in the 20th are still alive and well.

It is true, we had a little scrap the other day, but am glad to say all came through safe.

At present we are in billets further behind the line that we have ever been since first going into the trenches, just seven months ago. Believe me it is quite a relief to be away from the guns, especially the Fritz'.

I am sending you under separate cover, a copy of the March edition of our Regimental Gazette, which is edited in the trenches each month. Without a doubt you will find a few items worth reproducing, and you have the editors' permission to do so at your own will. I have no news just now, except that all are well. So with best wishes I remain,
