97th Algonquin Rifles in Temiskaming Ready for Action

New Liskeard Speaker

Dated: August 7, 1914

Ready for Action

Temiskaming volunteers are ready for going to the front on short notice. There are companies at New Liskeard, Haileybury, Cobalt, Elk Lake and Cochrane. Mr. Robinson is Capt. here but is looking for the vacancy in the position as Major, while Lieut. Morgan is looking for the Captaincy. Both are seniors in their respective positions. The Temiskaming soldiers are known as the 97th regiment of Algonquin Rifles. Just remember this when you are reading the despatches. But, all the same, we hope they may not be called upon - that is, we hope the war will be settled without the help of our home boys.

Capt. Robinson has no difficulty in getting volunteers. Indeed, he could not take nearly all who want to go. Conscription is a long way off in Canada. Our people are too patriotic to need compulsory laws to require them to fight for home and country.

The local militia have received instructions to muster to the full strength of 115 men for each company.
