Pay Rate comparison

Huntingdon Gleaner

Dated:

Those who are complaining that it costs more in proportion to maintain the Canadian soldiers in this war than it costs to maintain the British and French armies in the field, do not appear to be aware that, other considerations aside, Canadian soldiers are better paid. The subjoined table tells the whole story of a private per day, the European countries named being those in force in 1910, but there has been no considerable increase since then

Canada $1.10
England .28
France .02
Germany .05

The pay of commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers is likewise far higher in Canada. German soldiers employed in the German colonies used to receiving higher pay than those of England, especially in the case of men who had previously been in the home armies and had volunteered for the colonies. In France, Germany and Russia in the civil service are reserved for former army officers, although the salaries are very small, ranging from $1.50 to $3.50 a year. The advocates of conscription in England argue that it is therefore a cheaper system than voluntary enlistment, to which the answer is that conscription takes the man away from productive employment, and compels the community, that is to say, the taxpayer, to support him after a fashion.
