Northland Affair Will be Lesson to All Concerned

The transport ship Northland that is referred to in this article had received such bad reviews in the press that it slowed the return of troops in 1919 by increasing the scrutiny placed on the state of ships. This led to the cancellation of the Haveford in Early 1919, which was one of the contributing factors to the Kinmel Park riots.

Militia Department to Take Steps to Prevent Any Repetition

Ottawa, Jan. 30.

The militia department will take steps to see that there is no repetition of conditions referred to by Mr. Justice Hodgins in his report on the Northland complaints. It is pointed out that the criticism of the commissioner, in so far as it affects the department here, has to do with the conducting staff.

The overseas militia department which controls the arrangements made in England, must take its share of responsibility, and the authorities here have communicated to Sir Edward Kemp the findings of the commissioner. Whether the Northland will be used for transporting troops in the future, or if so, what alteration will be made to make her suitable for this work, is not known.
