Montréal had his first opportunity on Saturday night to give a victory welcome to returning soldiers after the fortunate conclusion of hostilities, and the citizens took full advantage of the occasion. It was not until 12:30 that the first train with returning soldiers arrived, but there was a crowd of close upon 4000 people surging around Bonaventure station when it pulled in, and, as the soldiers marched out the people cheered themselves hoarse. Owing to doubts as the time the train would arrive, there were was no band to meet the returning warriors, the lack of this was more than made up by the enthusiasm of those gathered to welcome the men. There were many affecting scenes as women rushed up to join their husbands or fathers, while others broke in to give an affectionate greeting to loved ones in the ranks, and the work of falling the men out became automatic, their being such a surge of rejoicing relatives that in a few moments the whole corps was dissolved into a kissing and embracing crowd of people, with joy that their men folks were back for good, and at last their war service was permanently ended as the dominant note.
