Letter to Toronto Lady May Indicate Whereabouts of Pte. J. W. Barnes of 75th Battalion

Having observed the  announcement in the newspaper of the missing members of the 75th Battalion, now in France, a Toronto young lady has written to Mayor Church¹ stating that Pte. J. W. Barnes, No. 657034, has no living relatives that she knows of, as he always said he never saw any of his folks. 

"He enlisted with the 162nd Parry Sound Battalion and left for overseas October 28," says the writer.  "When he got to England he was transferred to the 35th. Then he told me he had been put in the 75th.  On May 9 his name was in the list of missing.  On May 12 it was among the 'Died of Wounds'.   I couldn't imagine him dead, so I wrote to the Red Cross, and the chief recorder, and the captain of D Company, in which he was.  On June 23 I got a letter from Jack himself telling me he had been wounded in the left shoulder and taken prisoner, and that he was in Krankehans², Osnabruck, Deutschland.  I got another letter from his last Monday, in which he said he had been put to work.  He has been changed to another camp, and his address now is No. 63973, Hamelin, Z8629, Hanover, Deutschland."
